My Critique Essay #1

1 02 2008

I turned in my final draft to critique “Media, Discourse and the Public Sphere” today. I believe that I thought of some good criteria to use when explaining the text for web site writers. The information from the text was informative. I used my thesis in the introduction along with the criteria that I used to bring out the essays important facts and I tried to communicate that to my audience.

My next essay, I plan to annotate my text the same way, but I plan to read the text thoroughly at least 3 times before I annotate it. During this essay I second guessed myself until realizing the information that I received from the essay that I critiqued. I will try to organize my references, such as, the wiki, readings and lectures to use much more than this essay. This will help with knowing what is expected more during my rough and final draft.

By working on Essay #1: The Critique, I feel it took much concentration to annotate the text and find a summary. For a synthesis, we need to find a summary in the same way in order to use with other texts.

Why “Work Groups” are a Great Idea

24 01 2008

The “wiki” has been a beneficial tool for our group to use. Personally, I understand how to use it but I’m just having a hard time finding useful information to add that someone else hasn’t already added. Hopefully my input is useful and I plan on getting much better at it.

When we work together as a group, whether online such as now or in a classroom in which we divide up and answer questions that are assigned, it takes more research from our minds to find the answers we need. This will help out all of us to acquire the information needed for our goals. Also, in a writing class, when working in groups, it trains our minds into being more creative for essay creativity.

Group work forces all of us to be more comfortable with each other. This gives us confidence and knowing that we are here to help each other takes some of the anxiety away. There may be more classmates other than myself that doesn’t know the answer and by finding out by working together that will take away some of the anxiety, also. Making friends in class and online is always a good thing.

My Real World Criterion/Criteria

19 01 2008

While performing at my work, there is criteria that is very important to make sure my co-workers and I follow to make sure our product is manufactured for the customer requirements. My company produces many solar panels each day that are sold around the world to alternative power assembly businesses. The customers want to make sure the panel arrays produce enough power and will last at least 20 years after assembled.

The process in which I am responsible for is the sub module. It is a rectangular sheet of glass that is ground on all 4 sides to make sure the edges are not sharp and it ensures that it can withstand the stress of the high temperatures that it will continue to endure throughout many other processes during production.

The Primary Criteria that is followed:

1.)    The glass prepared to be the sub module should be machined to a size of 600mm +/-1mm x 1200mm +/-1mm in order to assemble into a finished solar module. The size is important when making many modules into an array for creating power.

2.)    The correct thickness of elements needs to be vacuum coated on to the sub module. The elements act as an isolation to later process that laser cut into the elements. The coated elements are measured every 100 plates.

3.)     Since the sub module is being heated and cooled rapidly by air, the possibility of it being warped needs to be addressed. The plate is measured for deflection to make sure it is flat within specification.

4.)    When the module is complete, a specific amount of light is emitted through it. This simulates sunlight into the module. A known amount of light will produce an amount of power that the module will produce. The input of light divided by the power created by the module is the efficiency of the particular module. This is the last criteria monitored by myself in our process. This number will be within a certain amount or my team will need to check our process parameters.

I left out much information due to the confidentiality of our company.

On a more related criteria demonstration, my wife and I recently purchased a minivan. We had brainstormed together our own criteria for what we wanted in order to make it worthwhile.

1.)    We needed at least a 7 passenger vehicle in order to transport our girls and their friends back and forth to school functions. This also provided room for when our families would visit and we would be able to drive them around.

2.)    Cost was the most important criteria. We did not want to exceed our budget or else other bills would not be paid.

3.)    The mileage was important to us because of the re-sale of the vehicle 4-6 years later. The vehicle will hold value much more with lower mileage.

4.)    Cleanliness of the vehicle shows the former owners took very good care of the minivan. This reflects on the mechanical performance.

Those are the 2 examples of using criteria that I have used most recently.

11 01 2008

I was a little confused here. My main thought of what I plan to acheive and learn in this class was posted as a reply comment. So I’m adding this paragraph to see if I’m doing this correctly yet or not.

Hello world!

I hope to do well in ENG112. I do enjoy writing about my interests in life.
